About the Article

This month in Anesthesiology News, Dr. David Sherer reflects in his popular column Wake-Up Call on the current state of the inhaled anesthesia field and the case for a new generation of inhaled agents. The article, "Why We Need a Breath of Fresh Air in Inhaled Anesthetic Research", spotlights Expanesthetics' work to do exactly that.

With the last new inhaled anesthetic in clinical use being discovered before we landed on the moon, this coverage brings broader visibility to a field that has seen little true innovation in decades and comes at a time when the growing understanding of the harm associated with intraoperative hypotension has sharpened the need for new inhaled anesthetics that may help address it.

There is mounting evidence that intraoperative hypotension can have a negative impact on patient outcomes, yet this is an expected side effect of the general anesthetics available today. In preclinical studies, Expanesthetics has identified three novel volatile anesthetic candidates that avoided hypotension at MAC. Some of this work has recently been published in Anesthesia & Analgesia, representing a significant milestone for Expanesthetics and for the field.

This feature in Anesthesiology News represents another important milestone in Expanesthetics' effort to bring new thinking, new science, and eventually new clinical options to inhaled anesthesia.
